| Is it better to develop two languages together or one
language later than the other? If the home conditions allow it, there is much value in developing children’s bilingualism earlier rather than later. Because of the ease with which young children acquire language, the uncluttered nature of early childhood, and the tendency to acquire pronunciation better when very young, early bilingualism needs encouragement wherever possible. Such early bilingualism gives immediate cognitive and social advantages, and possible longer-term economic, interpersonal and cultural advantages. If the family situation allows bilingualism early on in the child’s life, the best current advice is to start as soon as possible. |
